What makes a wine beautiful?
To The Black Olive all of this is important as we strive to build the best wine list the Mid-Atlantic has ever seen! Follow us as we reach for that goal.
From the Island of Santorini: Atlantis 2006 by Argyros
Last night warranted the tasting of a special wine. The wine we tasted, the exceptionally dark and cowboy-romantic Atlantis 2006 is a wine from the island of Santorini, where extreme conditions and a volcanic soil give wines half their character, and where rare and ancient varietals provide the other half of the beauty. In this case the grapes used are Mavrotragano, which we have discussed before in the blog, and Mandilaria,
which we will do some research on and get back to you about. Since this was only the second Mavrotragano that we have tried it is hard to pinpoint what it is about the grape that seduces the tastebud so alarmingly. Certainly winemaker royalty J.M Argyros puts the best spin possible on this wine, but it’s clear that something we love in wine is going on here and for the adventurous taster we suggest trying these Santorini wines WHENEVER YOU CAN FIND THEM. If you are at the Black Olive this may be somewhat easy, elsewhere, GOOD LUCK!
