The New Inn at the Black Olive: Part One

A dozen years ago when the Black Olive Restaurant first opened, Fell’s Point was still a struggling neighborhood, with many vacant houses, and an old city charm that was in a state of decay.  The original restaurant, which later expanded into a neighboring building, occupied a rowhouse with a storefront that had been vacant for years.  The renovation of this building was a turning point for the neighborhood.

It was possible at the time to sit on the back patio of the Black Olive and see the Inner Harbor beyond the vast expanse of parking lots and old warehouse structures that were left as ghosts after the toxic industries of Harbor East collapsed decades ago.

A dream was launched, looking out at the harbor.  It was an imagining of a redevelopment of the waterfront, the building of an inn where guests could enjoy the yet untapped beauty of this place.  In March of 2010 the Inn at the Black Olive will become a reality.  One of the things that will happen there is the opening of a wine market that will provide customers with the best sustainable wines in the world.  This week the wine blog will focus on the new Inn and give you a preview of what we have in store as far as wine is concerned, so stay tuned.
